Its a slaughter. A sea of Liberal Blue for NSW.
As everybody now knows the NSW Labor party has been slaughtered in the polls of last Saturday. In the Innerwest both Drummoyne and Strathfield electorates had swings over 20% with Drummoyne having a swing of over 25%. Balmain had gone green and Marrickville has kept Carmel Tebbutt. Congratulations to Charles Casuscelli, the new member for Strathfield and John Sidoti, the new member for Drummoyne.
The Labor party in NSW is left with Mt Druitt and a line of electorates running from Liverpool to Maroubra in Sydney. Cessnock next to Newcastle, which changed to Liberal and Wollongong electorates Shellharbour and Keira. And thats it. These are all electorates with high unemployment and therefore people living on welfare, a traditional Labor Party base. You can make up your own mind as to what that means.
Its a huge job to bring NSW back from the brink. The trains in Sydney are said to be 30 years behind and as a traveler myself I can only agree. 50 years as far as the Innerwest line is concerned. The freeway network cancelled by the Labor Wran government in the 70's means Sydney is in gridlock every peak hour and one major accident can cause a domino effect bringing the whole of Sydney to a standstill. An attempt to get people to ride bicycles instead of drive is a joke as there are no off road cycle ways to the city. In Marrickvile where the heavy traffic crawls along narrow roads through an industrial area, the Labor government introduced the bendy buses which are basically two buses joined by a flexible join. These can take 3 lanes to turn a corner and can not fit on a bus stop to pick up passengers. We have the West Link that was ready to go, with contractors booked, from the M4 to the city before the Olympic Games and was cancelled to save money. Money that probably went into corrupt politicians pockets.
